As engines and turbines have revolutionized our power supply in decades past, now solar is bringing about another wave of technological advancement. While not as predisposed to the stately architectures of old power plants, homages to photovoltaic systems ought to be no less impactful. Incorporating design elements following from the commemorative plaques placed as dedications or memorials at generating stations, I link this new movement with those of the past, signifying that while mechanically and scientifically distinct from other means, it continues on our goal of efficient and advantageous use of natural resources. For our use of wood, coal, and oil has allowed us to explore, invent, and collect to the degree that makes possible our next steps. Just as it seemed they’d blacken the skies for good, the darkened clouds of our own industry part, and we may more directly channel the energies cast from our home star.
If we understand our machinery as extensions of ourselves, then the spirit I capture in this composition is of the power that photovoltaic panels bestow upon us: to simply extend up our hand and bend the sun’s rays into electricity for motive power, heat, and light to further an everlasting service towards the advancement of Humanity.
